College Students May Not Buy That Textbook

University of Colorado junior Erica Truskolaski approaches college textbook buying with finesse. The physics student shops online. She shares books with classmates. She rents them. And, she avoids buying some books altogether because she said she can find similar educational material on the Web. She'll even consider photocopying portions of textbooks and then returning them. Seven out of 10 undergraduates in a national survey report that they avoided purchasing one or more textbooks because the cost is too high, according to a report released by the Student Public Interest Research Group.

College Freshmen Report Feeling Above Average
Among academics who track the behavior of young adults and teens, there's a touchy debate: Should the word "entitled" be used when talking about today's younger people? Are they overconfident in themselves? college students and others their age are more self-centered – narcissistic even – than past generations. Now she's turned up data showing that they also feel more superior about themselves than their elders did when they were young.

Information Overload
Guest columnists Alison J. Head and Michael B. Eisenberg of The Seattle Times push back on the prevailing idea that today's college students are slackers. Rather, these researchers argue that colleges must retool to help young people learn the skills to negotiate the vast amount of information at their disposal.

It's no one's fault but everyone's problem, because in trying to get our bearings in cyberspace, we often get things wrong, and the misconceptions spread so rapidly that they go unchallenged. Taken together, they constitute a font of proverbial nonwisdom.

This week, 11 University of Cincinnati seniors in the psychology program presented at an Educause event a comparison of the content of traditional college texts, one of which costs $168, to content they found for free on the Web.
